Careers in Education
The Careers in Education Magnet prepares students to pursue careers with young people. Students may choose among courses in child development, family psychology, internships and/or instructional theory and techniques. Students apply their learning through direct interaction with infants, toddlers, preschoolers or school-age youth at a variety of educational sites.
Students gain competence in applying the following knowledge and skills:
- Child growth and development practices
- Relationships with children
- Health, nutrition and safety issues
- Cognitive skill development
- Teaching techniques
- Curriculum and instruction
Bay ACES (Architecture, Construction, Environmental Services)
The Bay ACES Magnet offers a unique four-year high school education for students who are interested in the fields of urban horticulture, landscaping, ecology, city planning, civil engineering and architecture. This magnet provides students with the opportunity to develop the academic and technical skills they need to be more active learners, engaged and informed citizens, and qualified employees. A freshman magnet block of English and Technology is customized to meet the interests of Civil Engineering and Landscape Design students.
Hudson's Bay's extensive horticulture center hosts a floral shop, retail nursery, and science park on its beautifully landscaped site. The design, research codes, create virtual models, participate in engineering and architecture competitions. Because students have on-site access to the tools of the trade, they are able to apply their learning in real and relevant ways.
The community is an active partner, providing context for students to apply and extend content knowledge. Guest speakers, field trips, job shadows, service learning, internships and paid work-experience and instructional strategies such as case studies, inquiry based learning, competitions and hands-on activities provide the real-life context that engage and motivate students.
