PLCs will change to a one-hour early release next year

Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) will move to a new schedule for the 2012-13 school year.  A one-hour early release schedule will replace the two-hour late starts of past years.  On the new schedule, PLCs will be held twice each month, with the exception of September and December when PLCs will be held only once.  There will be no PLC meetings in June.

PLCs began in Vancouver Public Schools three years ago.  Research shows significant learning gains may be achieved if time is provided for educators to work together to discuss lesson planning, assessments of students, and interventions or enrichment of lessons.

Professional Learning Communities support the district’s strategic plan, and the results are positive, according to our teachers.  In a survey last spring, nearly 90 percent of Vancouver teachers agreed that PLCs have a positive impact on teaching and learning.

Educators participating in PLCs routinely focus on four essential questions:

  1. What do we expect students to learn?
  2. How will we know when they have learned it?
  3. How will we respond when they don’t learn?
  4. How will we respond when they already know it?

The following dates have been designated as one-hour early-release days for students for the 2012-13 school year:

September 17, 2012
October 8 and 22, 2012
November 5 and 19, 2012
December 3, 2012
January 7 and 28, 2013
February 11 and 25, 2013
March 11 and 25, 2013
April 15 and 29, 2013
May 13 and 20, 2013
